.When thepatches finally do come out clean andyou have removed any remainingsolvent, take a clean patch and dowseit with Break Free and run it throughthe barrel. Then take a clean patch andslowly run it through the barrel to sopup any excess. With the SKS Magazine open, I take anylon brush with solvent and clean theinside of the receiver.I use a very strong cleaner on theexterior and interior of the bolt.BreakFree Powder Blast is a good cleanerfor this.It is non oil based and reallyremoves crud without having to scruband without leaving any residue.http://www.surplusrifle.com/sks/cleaning/index.asp (3 of 5) [11/8/2002 8:20:22 PM]Collecting and Shooting the SKS RifleIf you disassemble the bolt springassembly, a good way to reassemble itis to push a pistol cleaning rod againstthe bottom of the recoil spring rod ,through the bottom of the recoil springtube. This will push the rod out andallow you to compress the spring andplace the retainer over the top.I use pistol cleaning rods and slottedends to take clean patches and runthem through the inside of the boltcarrier. This will remove any loose dirtand sop up any solvent. After you are finished cleaning the rifle, remove all of the bolt parts that aresoaking in solvent.Give them a goodbrush down with the nylon brush.Justpretend they are really dirty teeth andyou just ate two ears of corn.Makesure you dry them with clean ragsentirely.I spend some time here, youare not supposed to leave anyoil inside of a bolt.I run a clean patch or rag with a littlebreak free or a good gun oil over theentire rifle. Then I follow up with aclean rag sopping up any excess.I coat the exterior of the bolt and thebolt carrier and then wipe down with aclean rag.http://www.surplusrifle.com/sks/cleaning/index.asp (4 of 5) [11/8/2002 8:20:22 PM]Collecting and Shooting the SKS RifleI save the solvent I soaked all of theparts in and reuse it until it is a darkamber color and then I dispose of it.Once I am done cleaning the metal ofthe rifle, I turn to cleaning the wood. This SKS has an oil based finish, assome of them do, so I use WATCORejuvenating Oil to bring the lusterback to the wood.Using a clean rag with a little Oil, I rubdown the stock and handguard. Then Iwipe it down with a dry rag.If your SKS rifle has a lacquer stylefinish, do not use the oil.I recommendjust using a standard furniture polish toclean and restore the finish.Copyright 2002©http://www.surplusrifle.com/sks/cleaning/index.asp (5 of 5) [11/8/2002 8:20:22 PM]
